“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche.
On this episode, I read insightful passages from some of the great books I have read over the years. The ones I talk about today include: Mans Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl, Mindset by Carol Dweck, and Recovery by Russell Brand. Below are the key points discussed in this episode.
- In Mans Search For Meaning, I read a passage talking about the search for meaning in the midst of suffering. He explains: “When a man finds that it is his destiny to suffer, he will have to accept his suffering as his task; his single and unique task. He will have to acknowledge the fact that even in suffering he is unique and alone in the universe. No one can relieve him of his suffering or suffer in his place. His unique opportunity lies in the way in which he bears his burden.”
- Then, I read a passage from Mindset. Carol elegantly describes both mindsets, which one will benefit you the most, and why using examples of successful people. The set mindset is when you are set in their ways of thinking/behaving and don’t want to step outside of your comfort zone. The developing mindset is when understand that constant growth and development is necessary for self mastery.
- In Recovery, Russell talks about his journey through addiction recovery while listing out the 12 steps along the way. In the passage I read, Russell explains the 5-point guide to the cycle of addiction. 1) Pain. 2) Using an addictive agent, like alcohol, food, sex, work, dependent relationships to sooth and distract. 3) Temporary anaesthesia or distraction. 4) Consequences. 5) Shame and guilt, leading to pain and low self-esteem.
