“No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment.”
― Carol S. Dweck
“This is something I know for a fact: You have to work hardest for the things you love most.”
― Carol S. Dweck
On this episode, I talk about the mindset that only limits the quality of your life, the SET-Mindset. What are the qualities that make up this mind? Well, this mind tends to push other successful people out of their lives. This mind blames external circumstances for their suffering. They also ignore any calls to change. I talk about more of these qualities and how to break free of them on todays podcast episode.
- The ego does not like when it is challenged. It has an already constructed image of itself through the behaviours and thoughts that have been consistent over time. If the ego is challenged (someone tells you some hard truths about yourself), usually there is immediate negative emotion. The map you thought you knew requires a re-drawing and that takes cognitive effort. Then, if the person is already battling many problems in their world, any new problem will send them over the edge. So imagine more water being poured into an already filled glass.
- Before any real change can occur, you have to admit that the programs you are already running are insufficient and that you need help.
- The victim, who tends to have the set-mindset, tends to push others who are succeeding out of their lives. It’s almost like the success of these people is blinding to them. They are perceived as the ultimate judge and you can’t help notice your inadequacies when around them. So the set-mindset, unconsciously, tends to show much resistance to these people. The mind wants to stick with what’s familiar. Like minds attract.
- The stuck-mindset tends to blame external circumstances rather than look inwards toward itself. This mind says, “it is LUCK that all these bad things happen to me. I have always been dealt a bad hand.” The stuck-mindset thinks that things just happen to people without any real work. Or they think they are working hard but not aware that the results are negative and their strategies need to be adjusted. You have more control over your outcomes than you think.
- The stuck-mindset will blame genetics. “It is passed down within my family and I have nothing to do with it. It is out of my control.” This is completely false. Genes only play a 5% role in the totality of your overall health. The 95% is how you live your life. The stress levels of your day to day. Do you have a proper sleep and wake cycle? Healthy diet? Exercise practice? How are your relationships? Is the work you do fulfilling? There are many ways where you can control the quality of your life and thus, the quality of your health.
- The stuck-mindset, in the end, miss the calls of change. Someone tells you that things need to change, you ignore them. Someone tells you of a life-changing book, you never pick it up. Your body is sending you SIGNALS that you are way too stressed and you continue to run your same patterns. The calls to change fly by this mindset because whatever does not fit with their already existing values, they simply ignore.
